Dr. Johnson Tennis Umpire Chair
Dr. Johnson Tennis Umpire Chair
The modernist silhouette and purity of line of the chair are aesthetic references to the lean, strong physique of a tennis player. A lofty chair for making the right call, the Dr. Johnson Tennis Umpire Chair is named after American icon Dr. Robert Walter “Whirlwind” Johnson. Dr. Johnson trained the first two African-American Grand Slam champions–Arthur Ashe and Althea Gibson–on his home tennis court in our hometown of Lynchburg, Virginia. Umpires ensure that the game of tennis is played fair and square. Dr. Johnson instilled sportsmanship and his love for the game in his young players, but what we most admire is that he began, quite literally, to level the playing field by opening the sport to everyone – an umpire for all time. Known as the Godfather of Black Tennis, Dr. Johnson was inducted into the Tennis Hall of Fame in 2009. Our Dr. Johnson Tennis Umpire Chair, with a lifetime warranty, is an enduring tribute to his exceptional and game-changing legacy. Learn about the Whirlwind Johnson Foundation.
